Scripture: Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. (Matthew 2: 16-18).
Devotional: Egypt had been a house of bondage to Israel, and particularly cruel to the infants of Israel; yet it is to be a place of refuge to the holy Child Jesus. God, when he pleases, can make the worst of places serve the best of purposes. This was a trial of the faith of Joseph and Mary. But their faith, being tried, was found firm. If we and our infants are at any time in trouble, let us remember the straits in which Christ was when an infant. (Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary).
Prayer: Heavenly Father, each of us have our own Egypt. That place or thing in our life that holds us in bondage and prevents us from surrendering all to you. Some of us are in bondage because of circumstances that were beyond our control, but more often than not we are in bondage because of choices we have made that were not in alignment with your word. We have made decisions without seeking your wisdom and council; as a result we have suffered the consequences of those decisions. We have unintentionally brought our children into bondage and caused generational bondage to as a result. Yet even in the worst of times you have been there to offer guidance in our time of trouble. When we have repented and turned back to you we found you faithful to your promise of deliverance and protection. You have been our refuge of safety. Help us Father today to see that there is no place of bondage that you can not free us from if we will seek you. Increase our faith and help us to trust and obey your commandments that we might have the abundant life promised in serving Jesus Christ. In your word is all the wisdom and council that we will ever need to face and conquer the problems of this life. In the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, we give you praise and thanks. In every victory we give the glory to Jesus Christ our King. Amen.
