Scripture: In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory. (EP 1:13-14)
Reflection: We now know based on science that physical life begins at the point of conception for every human being. The unborn child is equipped with everything he/she will need to survive birth into the physical world when the male sperm and female egg unite. With proper nourishment and time that child will develop into a human life that is sustainable outside the mother’s womb. A new stage of life begins at birth.
In the same way, our salvation is conceived and sealed with Christ at the point of our authentic faith in Christ. It is the beginning stage of our development as a Christian.
As physical birth is a natural expectation of a healthy pregnancy after conception, so is water baptism a natural expectation following the point of our authentic belief in Christ (Acts 2:41; Acts 8:12; Acts 8:37-38; Acts 16:31-33).
It is the first privilege given to a Child of God (Acts 8:36-37). It was the first commandment given to the new Christian believer (Acts 10:48). It is a witness to the world that we have been born again into a new life into the family of God (Romans 6:4; Romans 8:1-2; 1 Cor 12:13).
Jesus led by example with His baptism. The believers water baptism is symbolic of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. It is an outward sign of what was conceived in the heart when we acknowledged and accepted our need of God's love, forgiveness, and salvation. Jesus told Nicodemus, a Jew, that to enter the Kingdom of God one needed to be born of water and spirit (John 3:5). The baptism of the Spirit comes from heaven (John 3:27). It is given to all true believers.
"As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance,
but He who is coming after me is mightier than I,
and I am not fit to remove His sandals;
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Prayer: Father, we pray today for your kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven.
Open our eyes and hearts Lord, that we might be able to humble our selves and accept the gift of eternal life that you have promised to those who believe. Baptize us with you Holy Spirit. Strengthen us that we may be able to walk in a way that is worthy of your calling on our lives. May our words and actions bring glory to your name for we know that the power of death has no hold on those the place their trust in you. We ask these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.
